UPDATE: January 5, 2009: Coach Tom here. Hey, I appreciate all the interest in my “Pool School.” I have good news and “challenging” news. The good is totally selfish, Pool School-Session One is full. I cannot accept any more swimmers, sorry. The challenging news is actually good news, too.

Session One was the first time “Pool School” took place over Christmas and New Year’s. I will never do that again! Too many pool closures and wacky schedules! This is good news for you! I learned A TON with respect to improving the program for Session Two.

Please take a minute to read through the information carefully! I have re-designed the program. Also, there are some requirements for the class. Plus, you can gain some insight on how I approach helping you. Enjoy! Coach Tom

Tom’s Pool School (TPS)

Tom Ryan, Competitor Texas Magazines, 2005 & 2006 Triathlon Coach of the Year offers Tom’s Pools School for the “Developing Athlete” (TPS).

(TPS) is an in-depth, eight-hour, three-level, coached swim program designed for the “developing athlete.”

Developing Athlete = Beginner to advanced intermediate athlete who recognizes their need to improve and the value of proper technique. TPS is perfect for the 1:30-2:15 per 100-yard swimmer! You’ll learn to swim faster with and more efficiently!

NEW improvements for Coach Tom’s Pool School (TPS). TPS now has three levels.

Level One is a three-hour session that includes classroom, individual under-water filming of swim stroke and technique improvement.
Level Two is a two-hour session specifically designed for in-water drills and technique.
Level Three is another three-hour session with above water fiming, classroom and swim stroke and technique improvement.

All swimmers MUST begin at Level One. Once a swimmer progresses through Level Three, they are eligible for monthly “Pool School,” coached workouts.

Due to the heavy volume of DSU activities, Coach Tom’s Pool School is only offered in DSU’s “off-season” which runs from November-February. Keep in mind, “Pool School” is limited to 10 swimmers! Thanks!

Session One: SOLD OUT, sorry.

Session Two: SOLD OUT, sorry. Class One, Level One, Saturday, January 24, 2009, 1-4 p.m., Southlake Natatorium.

FAQ’S for Tom’s Pool School:

What if I can’t make it to every class?
Over the past two-years, I’ve learned that is unlikely, if not impossible, for everyone to make all sessions. That is one of the reasons I change the program to a three-level format. It allows swimmers to attend each level once-a-month along with progressing through the program with consistent coaching that fits the athletes schedule more closely. We also have “make-up” sessions on Wednesday’s. It is worth noting that even if you do not miss any weekend sessions, you are welcome to attend all the make-up sessions!

I’m a pretty good swimmer, can I jump into Level Two or Three?
In a word, no. I need all eight hours to film, breakdown and improve your stroke. In my opinion, a one or two hour swim session with no follow up is a waste of your money. Improving a swim stroke that has multiple years of conditioning cannot be changed in one session. The mind and body don’t work in that way.

What do I need for the class?
Swim suit, (no nude swimming) and goggles. If you have fins and paddles, bring them. Oh, and the most important thing you need is a “KICK BUTT” attitude! You will leave this class a better and more efficient swimmer!

OK, I am a really bad swimmer!
That is why you seek help! Let’s GO!

Two-Cents from Coach Tom:
“99% of all swimmers waste a tremendous amount of energy in the water. Even with a few, simple corrections to head balance, catching the water and a better kick, swimming becomes so much easier. Swimming is a lot like golf in that it is virtually all technique. If you don’t correct your golf swing, you will hit bad shots. If you don’t work on your swim technique, improving your stroke is about as likely as George Clooney returning to ER!”

Previous Updates:

UPDATE: August, 2008: Coach Tom here. Hey, I appreciate all the interest in my “Pool School.” I have received questions asking if I am going to offer a one-day or weekend clinic in the near future. Here’s the deal, honestly, a one-day clinic is stealing your money. I can help you, but one-day for three hours is probably not going to offer you much long term benefit.

I am  working on securing a weekend in September and October to get you started. Then, in November, we can knock out the “Pool School.” Pool school is the real deal. With 15+ hours in the water and filming, I can really help you!

Please send me an e-mail, tom@dallassportsuniversity.com if you would like to be notified of my September and October weekend clinics. That’s it! Thanks for the interest! Coach Tom

March-October 2008, Coach Tom offers limited swim coaching in all of his multisport programs (TRI 101, TRI 202, half and full Ironman.) In addition, he offers Coach T’s Saturday or Sunday Swim School (SSS) which includes underwater filming, stroke evaluation and improvement. SSS is limited to 4-6 swimmers.
