KICK BUTT U. COACHING!

Kick Butt U

UPDATED, FEBRUARY 1, 2009: Coach Tom here. Thanks for checking out my information. I’ve got to be honest, I simply cannot handle any more one-on-one clients. I do appreciate the interest.

If you need help, let me know tom@dallasathletes.com and I will do the best I can to point you in the right direction. I have a couple of wonderful recommendations if you want one-on-one coaching. Thanks again! Tom

If you’ve looked through the DSU site, you’ve seen multiple group and individual training options. In this section, entitled, Kick Butt U. Coaching (KBU), you’ll find an explanation of our training philosophy.

It is worth noting that there are many, many wonderful fitness coaches across the country whose ideals, techniques and philosophies differ greatly from coach-to-coach. It is important to find the coach that works for YOU!

The Philosophy of KBU Coaching

Let’s start by asking who will benefit the most from our style of coaching?

KBU specializes in intermediate - advanced intermediate athlete training. KBU is not the best choice for the elite level athlete.

The ideal KBU client is the person looking to balance work, family and training. You might be thinking, “that is everyone!” Unfortunately, that is not the case. Through our “Athlete Profile” we find many individuals who do not seek a balance. Rather, they have an “extreme individual purpose” versus a balanced approach to training.

If you are looking to complete your first half or full marathon; half or full Ironman or you would like to improve on a previous half or full marathon or Ironman; learn about goal setting, nutrition, technique, rest and endurance training along with work, family and fitness balance, we believe KBU Coaching is something your should consider!

We are not the best organization for the person who wants to go from a 5K to qualifying for the Boston Marathon in six-months! Or the person who sees an Ironman triathlon on television and wants to conquer Ironman as their first event.

KBU Coaching has group, beginner programs for TRI 101 athlete looking to add health and fitness to their lifestyle!

The Teacher of KBU Coaching

KBU Coaching was developed by Tom Ryan, Dallas Athletes founder and president of Dallas Sports University. Along with his assistants, Coach T directs all semi-custom and complete-custom training.

Tom was named back-to-back “Triathlon Coach of the Year” by Competitor Magazine. He is a four-time Ironman finisher, 20-year triathlete with multiple age group wins at regional and national races.

Over the past fifteen-years, he has spoken at over 100 colleges and universities regarding health, fitness and nutrition.

Tom developed all the TRI 101, TRI 202, half and full marathon and half Ironman and Ironman training programs. Tom’s style is vastly different from many of the coaches. As mentioned in The Philosophy of KBU Coaching section his programs are about balance. Tom believes most athletes overtrain. They put in too much mileage, which leads to injury, mental and physical exhaustion.

Tom, age 49, still competes on occasion. In July 2007, he finished 7th in his age group at the Elite National Triathlon Championship in New York City. His best finish at the Elite National Triathlon Championships was in 2002 where he finished second by :01! In 2007, he finished seventh! (:40 separated the first seven athletes!)

The majority of his time is now spent helping athletes reach their goals. Living in Flower Mound, TX, a suburb of Dallas, Tom has been married to his wife, Vicki for nearly 20-years. They have two healthy daughter’s, Chandler, age 15 and Mary Frances, age 11.

Again, balance of work, family and fitness is the foundation of KBU Coaching.

Becoming a KBU Coaching Athlete

KBU Coaching offers semi-custom and complete-custom coaching programs. (As mentioned, group beginner/first-timer TRI 101 and RUN 101 programs are offered, too.)

Step One is to fill out KBU’s nine-page “Athlete Profile.” From there, Coach Tom and one of his assistants review each application to make sure KBU Coaching can help you. The Athlete Profile asks about previous athletic history, medical, lifestyle, goals, time available per week for training, nutrition, etc. to give you the best possible advice and teaching for your goals.

Due to the amount of time invested in each athlete, Coach Tom only works with 20 individual athletes in his complete-custom, one-of-kind programs. His support staff, which includes a dietician, strength training expert and assistant coaches help with all group and semi-custom clients.

If you are interested in becoming a KBU athlete, contact Tom, to set-up a phone consult and “Athlete Profile.”
