! An unforgettable weekend of sport, sightseeing and relaxing in the beautiful San Juan Mountains!
Camp History: This will be Year Three for the Dallas Athletes Durango Camp. The camp is lead by expert cyclist and Durango, CO resident, Scott Smith and Dallas Athletes president, Tom Ryan, who was voted back-to-back Triathlete Coach of the Year by Competitor Magazine.
Camp Dates: Thursday, August 6-Sunday, August 9, 2009
Camp Itenerary:
Thursday, August 6: Travel day to Durango, CO. Athletes are asked to arrive on or before 3:00 P.M. Drive time from Dallas, TX, 12.5 hours. Drive time from Albuquerque International Airport, 3.5 hours.
5-7 p.m.: Cycle along long valley loop + Shalona. Enjoy a scenic ride, flat to gently rolling though rising cliffs on both sides. Two-mile climb to Shalona (7% grade) and return to Durango. 34-miles with 1,200 feet of elevation gain.
7:30 p.m.: Dinner together or on your own.
Friday, August 7:
7:30-8:30 a.m.: Coach swim with Coach Tom at the Durango Rec. Center.
8:45-11-45 a.m.: Cycling from Rec. Center on Hwy. 240; a three-mile climb that turns into rolling hills along the river to beautiful Vallecito Lake. Return to Durango for a well deserved lunch. Ride is 40-miles with 3,200 feet of climbing. Outstanding!
Noon-1:30 p.m.: Lunch and relax!
1:30-5:00 p.m.: Colorado Fun! White Water Rafting (optional), shop or just relax.
6:30 p.m.: Dinner at Steamworks, a popular Durango micro-brewery. Entries $10-$15.
Saturday, August 8: A Epic Day!
8-9:00 a.m.:Travel by car 25-miles north of Durango to Scott’s house for pre-ride oxygen treatment and breakfast!
9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.: Bike ride (48-miles) to Ouray, CO. The ride begins with a 2-mile climb. Then, a 7-mile climb to 10,640 ft. on Coal Bank Pass. After a fast, 3-mile descent, we climb 4-miles to Molas Pass, 10,960 ft. Next is an 8-mile descent into Silverton, CO to begin our final climb of the day. From Silverton, we climb 16-miles to 11,200 ft to Red Mountain Pass. We finish the ride with an incredible8-mile descent into Ouray, CO. The final descent is spectacular! We are surrounded by 1000 ft. drop offs and canyon walls!
NOTE: Non-riders (friends and/or family) are encouraged to use these four-hours to stop at the sights in Silverton, waterfalls, Box Canyon and other points of interest.
1-2:30 p.m.:Beer and pizza in Ouray, CO followed by a “sit-in” in a crystal clear, ice cold stream!
6:30 p.m.: BBQ at the Smith’s house!
Sunday, August 10
10-11:00 a.m.: If you can move a muscle, swim at Rec. Center 
11:30: Brunch/lunch!
Camp Features Include: van support for rides, three breakfasts and lunches, Saturday night BBQ, guides (Scott and Tom) on all rides, gels and replacement drink for all workouts.
*Gels and replacement drink for all workouts. If an athlete chooses to use their own brand of bars, gels and replacement drinks, the cost of those items are the responsibility of the athlete.
Cost of Camp: *$129 *Depending on the number of people driving or flying, and bike shipments, we may need to rent a van and/or vehicle. The cost of those vehicles will be divided evenly by those benfitting.
FAQ’S
Is this an ”Athlete Only” camp or can family and friends attend? Family and friends are not only welcome, they are encouraged to join us! While we are exhausting ourselves, Durango is full of stuff to do! Historic downtown Durango has very unique shops and restaurants, mountain biking that is out of this world, horseback riding, DMR ski resort with alpine slide and much more!
What about travel? Durango is 12.5 hours from Dallas, TX. For those who choose to fly, Albuquerque, NM is a 3.5 hour drive from Durango. As mentioned, we ask that all athletes arrive on or before 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2009. Depending on the size of the group, we will be renting a van in Albuquerque.
Hotel? Rooms at the Double Tree or Hampton Inn range from $144-$174.
How do I get my bike to Durango? A. ride it, B. check it on your flight for $150-$175, C. Dallas Athletes will be offering bike transport from Dallas for $125 round-trip.
